Phood Phetish!

 8.28.2011

Phood on Main is one of my all-time favorite eateries in Riverside.

Last time I visited Riverside I had lunch with a good friend of mine at Phood.  Not only are they Vegan and GF friendly, they have the most amazing tasting entrees and desserts.

Naturally, I couldn't resist a Red Velvet Gluten Free cupcake. I spoke with Chef Maria Cohen about the gluten free options, and she said everything on the menu is pretty much gluten free and that it would be easier for her to tell me what was NOT gluten free than what IS...there are only a few items on their entire menu that are not gluten free!

Nutritional Review: "The Chip," "Chippy," "Chippy Chip," aka Chipotle

 8.11.2011

Check out Chipotle's allergy and gluten free menu options here   "The Chip" also promises their chicken is organically fed; however, they are now indicating that their naturally-raised chickens are not good enough, and purely vegetarian-fed chickens are coming soon at your nearest Chip!

By and large, I tend to follow a 95% vegetarian diet.  I started eating this way years ago, and I feel better after I eat because, at least I believe it is because, I have Type A Blood which does not break down or digest red meat as well as other O or AB types!

Furthermore, I am not sure I ever fully acquired an affinity towards the texture of most meats.  And I really did not plan on changing my veggie ways even when I recently made the switch to a gluten-free diet.

But chicken seems harmless enough, right? And it has protein, etc, etc.  Gluten-free does not require carnal abstinence.  And while that doesn't mean gluten-free followers have a free pass to consume mass quantities of meat, it does bring up an issue that has historically prevented me from eating any variety of bird, cow, or pig - especially on the go or at restaurants.  Have you ever noticed, I mean really inspected, the meat that is presented to you at places like Panda Express, Del Taco, Applebees, Chilis, you name it?  If you took the time to inspect, you might discover that which you did not wish to know and you may prefer to eat in blissful ignorance.

But grow up, we are adults and are in charge of what we push down our esophagus and into our intestines.  Most chicken prepared at restauarants or fast food places is down right frightening.  You have no idea what those chickens were fed, where they came from, how fresh the meat is!

So with that in mind,  I wanted to share a little information about the chicken from Chipotle,  a popular lunch or dinner favorite for mass amounts of Americans. And, because the chip is cafeteria-esque, you can chose and have 100% control over how your food is prepared.  For Gluten Free by the way - their corn tortillas, chips, and burrito bowls are good to go!

And if you are dairy free- stay away from the sour cream and cheese.  Also, even though you may think the salad is a good option, I would stray away.  The dressing is not gluten free nor is it free of sugar and calories, and the average salad created from the Chip packs over 1000 calories! You are better off opting for 2 corn tacos, or crispy tacos, or a burrito bowl, which will keep you full for longer! And you can always add guacamole, who doesn't love guac?  Which adds Omega-3 and good essential fats!

Fire and Ice - Restaurant Review (with Gluten Free options!)

The Hubby and I went to Fire and Ice last night for Friday night date night! We asked for an allergy list, to which they readily supplied us with that indicated which sauces were gluten free.  We each got a salad and then stuffed our bowls with veggies and meat (I opted for tofu) and then watched as they grilled up our dinner!
This restaurant has an outside patio with a large fire pit and all around great ambiance! They sing for birthdays and put a bachelorette on the spot and sang to her too!
