PANCAKES!

 11.22.2011

Over the weekend I decided to surprise B with breakfast in bed...the first batch of pancakes I made turned out well! They were completely oil free and vegan.  However, the second batch, um, well...let's just say I had a smoothie for breakfast.

Vita-Mix Arrives Just In Time for the Holidays!

 11.12.2011

A while ago I posted about how so very badly I yearned for a Vita-Mix.  After much reading lately on RAW and Vegan food preparations, I decided to bite the bullet and make the purchase.
I have to admit, rationalizing this near $500.00 blender purchase to my hubby wasn't easy, but law school served me well in my negotiation and persuasive argument skills, and I won this negotiation.  I poised the purchase as a necessary investment that our bodies could not live without.  I waited 1 1/2 long weeks for the big brown box to arrive.

Not only did my commercial strength appliance come with a Live Fresh starter cookbook, but it also was accompanied with the The Beauty Detox Solution by Kimberly Snyder which I have begun avidly reading.  This book has been teaching me so much about digestion, nutrient absorption and overall health and gets me even more excited to begin trying delicious healthy and fresh new recipes.

My purchase also came complete with Ani Phyo's Raw Food Essentials Cookbook, as well as 2 nut mylk bags so that I too, can soak, blend and strain my own nut mylk - in a variety of flavors to boot!

I couldn't wait to get started blending away and I was not disappointed one bit.  This thing has more horsepower than my husbands Dodge Avenger!

I started by making my first Vita Smoothie filled with frozen cherries, pineapple (it pulverizes huge chunks), blackberries (the Vita emulsifies seeds for a "super smooth" texture), water, a scoop of Garden of Life's Perfect Food Raw Organic Green Super Food, and a scoop of RAW Vegan protein powder.

The result? Nothing short of fabulous! I plan on starting every morning with a fruit/greens smoothie! There are so many different variations of recipes to try - and I can't wait to put to practice Kimberly Snyder's Glowing Green Breakfast Smoothie!

Refreshing Cocktails!

 9.11.2011

A majority of mornings, B and I juice a combination of fruits and veggies.  What I am realizing is that there are some fruits that juice better than others, and certain combinations of veggies and fruits pair well together, others do not.  With that said, juicing is relatively fool-proof, and you can't really go wrong with any variety of fresh produce.  But not all fruits are created equal, and each has its own benefits.  Red Cabbage is one of the most healing vegetables, for example, that you would not normally eat - but when juiced in combination with other greens and fruits, you get all the benefits in one gulp! YUM!

Huevos + Juice: Ring the Alarm!

 8.30.2011

Try this healthy breakfast! Corn Tortillas smothered with scrambled eggs (2 yolks to 4 egg whites), avocado slices, chopped onion, Soy Cheese, Salsa,  sprinkled with a bit of cilantro! I would have added soy chorizo, but I forgot I had put it in the freezer, so next time. :)

I also thought of adding black beans, but I needed to whip up breakfast in a jiffy so I opted out...

My sister in law knows how to cook tortillas on a stove top practically in her sleep.  She handles that stovetop like Sir-Mix-Alot.  I have to become her understudy ASAP; well that, or purchase myself a nice big, accessible fire extinguisher because I now have third degree burns on my phalanges and nearly lost all of my hot air blowing out a small fire.

Which only reminds me of good times, when we were kids and would bug my mom about when dinner would be ready.  My mom would reassure us, "You'll know when dinner is ready when you hear the fire alarm; come and get it while its hot!"

It was either the alarm or the cow bell which lead us to the table!

Every time I attempt to warm a tortilla on my stove, I have grand visions walking past the windows of the ladies making the fresh tortillas in Old Town San Diego.  It never turns out anything like my memory.  But I digress, maybe I need to get one of those grills with the holes in it? Does anyone know what that is?

To wash down the Huevos Semi-Rancheros - a nice freshly juiced cocktail full of:
Cabbage
Orange
Apples
Beet
and Ginger!

Get your AM drank on!

Fruit Smoothies!!

 8.06.2011

This weekend I was going to make G-free pancakes, but our cleaning lady came (thank God!) and I felt like making something fast and not highly dish-prone so as to preserve the clean counter-tops for a day.  We opted for Mixed Berry + Mango Smoothies.

I loaded the blender with frozen mixed berries (blueberries, strawberries, blackberries) and frozen mango (the kind with no added sugar), poured some liquid Ginger into the mix, water, and although I would have preferred to give the smoothie creamy texture by using coconut milk, we ran out, so I supplemented with organic, fat-free half and half.

The result? Yummy, mess-free, creamy and anti-oxidant infused smoothies! Yay!

How many women, I wonder, do more than 4 things while driving...I mean, these days, with social media, Twitter, Facebook, cell phones, Ipads, Ipods, Tablets, Books on Tab, Blackberrys, Bluetooth....I could go on but you get the picture.

This is what my usual morning commute looks like, coffee, toast or waffle (or donut if it's that kind of morning), make up, checking Blackberry, making phone calls, and sometimes even finishing getting dressed.

Oh, and always primping the eyebrows, the visor mirror is like one of the fun house mirrors.  I could stare at those furry frames for hours at home, and then BAM, as soon as I get into the car, and pull that grey visor down, all of a sudden I am a sasquatch.

These days, everyone is multi-tasking and I think it's getting the better of us.  I do not advocate this kind of behavior, in fact, I embrace the "art of doing nothing," and wish Americans knew how to do more of that.  When I studied in Salzburg, Austria, my girlfriend and I would walk to a cafe in the morning, grab a croissant and a cappuccino, stroll down the cobblestone street to class.  Then we would grab a glass of wine, or beer, and a pizza at a side street cafe, and lunch and people watch for an hour to two.  The waiters hardly come by to ask how the food is.  Not because they are rude, but because they don't assume everyone is in a full on steam blowing hurry!

Ah.  The sweet life: knowing how to appreciate the art of doing nothing.
